What month do Crappie Spawn?

Here in North Texas the crappie spawn takes place around mid March and last till mid May. Fishing for crappie right before and after spawn can be great.

 

Where do Crappie Spawn?

Crappie spawn in 1.5 feet to 10 feet of calm water. Usually near submerged vegetation, on or near flooded brush and timber, in the back of protected coves and shallow island areas. 

 

What Temperatures do Crappie Spawn?

When water temps reach 60 degrees Fahrenheit the crappie start to spawn. The crappie spawn peaks when water temps reach 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. 

 

How to catch Spawning Crappie?

Use a 1/32 to 1/8 ounce jig or a minnow and fish in areas mentioned above. If using a bobber, set it roughly half way to two thirds of the water column and cast near structures. 

Fish slowly and if no bites within 10 or 15 minutes, move to another location or switch baits. Crappie tend to congregate in groups, so if you catch one, there could be more.

 

What is the legal Crappie limit in Texas?

The legal limit for crappie is 25 that are at least 10 inches in length.
